Privacy
What we keep, and why
Last updated 26 October 2026
Story Atlas is a small fan project. It doesn't need to know who you are, so for the most part it doesn't. No ad trackers, no tracking cookies, no profiles. This page lists everything it does store.
Who is responsible
Stargazr BV, Willem van Oranjelaan(MEL) in Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht., Belgium, enterprise number BE1028851383, is the data controller. Questions or requests: privacy@stargazr.be.
What we collect
- Visit statistics. We use Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without storing your IP address. Visitors are told apart for one day only, using a hash that is thrown away. We see totals like "300 views of the Rama page", not people. Legal basis: legitimate interest (knowing which worlds people read).
- "Get the book" clicks. When you follow a store link we record which book and your country (from the request, e.g. "BE"). No IP address, no ID. Legal basis: legitimate interest. Kept for statistics.
- Votes for the next book. If you vote, we store the book and a random voter ID, also kept in the
sa_votercookie, so each browser votes once per book. It isn't linked to your name, email or IP. Legal basis: legitimate interest (a fair vote). Kept as long as the vote is open, at most 2 years. - Quiz scores. Your score (e.g. 7 of 10) and which world, with no ID at all, so we can show averages.
- Your email, if you sign up to hear about new worlds. We use it only for that: one short email per new book. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw any time with the unsubscribe link in every email or by writing to us. Unsubscribing deletes your address straight away.
- Server logs. Like any website, our host Vercel briefly processes your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and fend off abuse. Our own code also keeps IP addresses in memory for up to an hour to rate-limit votes and sign-ups; they are never written to the database. Hosting logs are kept by Vercel for a short time only. Legal basis: legitimate interest (running a secure site).
Fonts are served from our own domain, so loading the site doesn't contact Google or any other font service.
Cookies and local storage
We only use what the site needs to work or what you've asked for. Nothing for advertising or tracking, so there is no cookie banner to click through.
| Name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
sa_voter | Remembers which books you voted for, so you can't vote twice. A random ID, set only when you click a vote button. | 400 days | Essential for a feature you used |
sa_admin | Keeps the site owner logged in to the admin page. Never set for visitors. | 30 days | Essential (admin only) |
atlas-enter, atlas-return (session storage) | Remembers which book you just opened, for the page-turn animation between the home page and a world. | Until you close the tab | Essential (site function) |
atlas-lite-note (session storage) | Remembers you've already seen the "lighter graphics on phones" note. | Until you close the tab | Essential (site function) |
Who processes it for us
- Vercel Inc. (USA): hosting and the cookieless analytics.
- Neon Inc. (USA): the database holding the clicks, votes, quiz scores and newsletter emails.
Both are US companies, so data may be processed outside the EU. Both are certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and also sign the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses with us. We don't sell or share your data with anyone else.
"Get the book" links
The "Get the book" buttons take you to an online bookshop. Some of these may become affiliate links (for example Amazon Associates): if you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps pay for the hosting. Once you're on the shop's site, their own privacy policy and cookies apply, not ours.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the data we hold about you, ask us to restrict or stop processing it, object to processing based on legitimate interest, and get a copy of it to take elsewhere. Because most of what we store is anonymous, we often simply can't tell which record is yours; for your email we can always help. Write to privacy@stargazr.be and we'll reply within a month.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Belgian Data Protection Authority (Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit / Autorité de protection des données): gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit.be, or to the authority where you live.
Changes
If this changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
